Tropical Audubon Society North Key Largo bird walk. Eighteen birders joined me for our trip down to Key Largo for Keys specialties. Meeting in Florida City we gathered seeing Common Mynas and a number of resident birds. Our first stop was Panama Jacks which usually can have a number of migrants but today was extremely quiet. One highlight was A White-crowned Pigeon that perched high in the mangroves allowing all of us a great looks the glowing and brilliant white crown of the White-crowned Pigeon. We continued to the three-way stop and made our way back, on foot (a little dangerous to park along the road), to the lakes where the water is very low but had a number of waders including Reddish Egret and a calling Clapper Rail. We continued to Old 905 at power poll 94 where there is easy access into the the Dagney Johnson Key Largo Hammock. We added a few warblers along the trail, American Redstart, numerous Northern Waterthrushes along the road and a Cape May Warbler with an injured wing but it seemed to be getting along well. The highlight was a Mangrove Cuckoo that called and was seen right above us and allowing great views while it fed in the canopy. We finished up a Carysfort Circle where there were numerous Cape May Warblers and a great look at a Blackpoll Warbler. We finished up as we do every year with lunch at the Buzzard’s Roost restaurant where we always receive the best service. Thank you all for participating and we look foward to Tropical Audubon’s bird walks starting up again in the fall.
