Twenty-seven birders joined me this morning for the TAS birding trip to the “Lucky Hammock” area on Aerojet Road (SW 232 Avenue) in Homestead. From the parking area, we walked south along Aerojet Road for about 1.5 miles to the fishing deck along the west side of the road before turning back. Though rain showers were in the area, we didn’t experience any rain until we were back in the parking area at the end of the trip. Birds weren’t plentiful, but we still managed to tally 30 species. Highlights include a flyover by five Sandhill Cranes, two light morph Short-tailed Hawks circling overhead and a Piliated Woodpecker flying over the group. Eastern Kingbirds were by far the most common migrant seen. An eBird checklist for the trip can be viewed here. Photo of the group at the fishing deck courtesy of Brian Rapoza.
